Starting with a sketch
This guy has always stood out in my mind. He represents the first times I was able to conjure up an image out of my imagination. I have been one to shoot lots of reference photos for a project. To the point of it being a crutch. I've always been impressed with character designers. You look at their sketches and think how in the heck did he or she come up with that? They must have an extremely keen sense of anatomy. Thinking about that one day I came up with... well... we'll call him the Alaskan Explorer. Now my co-workers have told me before to do "something" with drawings like this. I'll paint him. I'll push him in a direction and see what comes of it.
